Zombicide review

Zombicide

It’s time for good old zombie attack! Only the strongest and bravest will survive! Zombicide is coming… Show them no mercy!

«Zombicide» board game was developed by «Guillotine Games» and «Asmodee» in 2012. The main designers are Raphaël Guiton, Jean-Baptiste Lullien and Nicolas Raoult. You probably know them for their works in «Cry Havoc», «AT-43» and etc.

Illustrations are very essential point in this game because they seem to look quite realistic and colorful. They were crafted by Nicolas Fructus, Édouard Guiton, Mathieu Harlaut and Eric Nouhaut who can be familiar in such projects like «Arcadia Quest», «Wrath of Kings» and many others.

Miniatures

The miniatures in this game are established by Survivors and Zombivors. It means that character can be infected by zombie and become walking dead. Moreover, you can paint every miniature by yourself and they are completely different – samurai girls, police man, fatty zombies, guys with a chainsaws… and all of them can be customized! That’s amazing, isn’t it?

Zombicide - Miniatures

Gameplay

«Zombicide» is a co-operative game where players are the team of survivors. Each of them has unique abilities and skills. Use tactics and teamwork against the crowds of walking dead! Zombies are stupid and their actions are obvious but they are deadly and there are always more of them than your bullets! So, how many players are available? You can play Zombicide from 1 to 6 players!

You should find weapons and kill zombies. The more zombies you kill the more skills you will get. The more skills you have the more zombies will appear. That’s that! Event triggers on a map will make new zombies spawn in the area, so watch your steps!

You can play ten scenarios on different maps which made from the available modular map tiles and download new scenarios from the designer’s website or even create yours!

Also, this game something in common with RPG mechanics because survivors get an experience for killing zombies and then they can purchase some skills.

Zombicide - Gameplay

Rules

It’s time to read the instructions! «Zombicide» has a series of game turns which should be carried out in following order:

Player Phase

The player with the “first player” token takes the turn. Then he activates his Survivors in the order he chooses. Each Survivor has three Actions to perform per turn, though Skills can allow him to perform extra Actions in the game progress. The Survivor uses his Actions to kill Zombies, move around the map, and perform other tasks to complete different Mission objectives. When player activates all his Survivors the player to his left takes the turn and activates his Survivors in the same way. When all the players have finished their turns, the Players’ Phase is over.

Zombie Phase

All the Zombies on the board activate and spend one Action. Runners get two Actions and they can attack twice or attack and move, move and attack, or even move twice. When all Zombies have performed their Actions new Zombies appear in all of the active Spawn Zones on the board.

Ending Phase

All Noise tokens should be removed from the board and the first player hands over the “first player” token to the player on his left. Another game turn begins.

Winning and Losing

The game is lost when all Survivors have been killed. The game is won immediately when all of the Mission objectives have been completed.

Missions and Quests

This game has 10 missions in the original set, but there are more of them in the expansions. Let’s check the most basic scenario –

The Escape

Useful tiles: 4C, 2C, 7B, 3C, 1B & 5D.

Objectives

Complete the tasks in the following order:

  • Place up to six supply cards under the car tokens (pay attention to the special rules). The supply cards are Canned Food, Rice, or Water cards.
  • Get into as many cars as it is needed with the rest of the Survivors.
  • Reach the Exit Zone with the Survivors in cars. A car that reaches this Zone leaves the board with its occupants and supplies. Put aside the supply cards that made it off the board with the cars. You win if there are six or more.

Special Rules

  • You can’t Search the Survivors’ Starting Zone.
  • Placing supplies in a car: At the cost of one Action, a Survivor can place (or take) one Canned Food, Rice, or Water card Missions under a car token in the Zone he currently occupies.
  • The pimpmobile must be inspected only once. It contains Ma’s Shotgun or the Evil Twins.
  • It is possible to search a police car more than once. Draw cards until you find a weapon.

Weapons

The weapons in this game can be very different because it depends on the expansion pack you use. Let’s see what weapons you can use in Season 1 –

Pan, Crowbar, Fire Axe, Machete, Baseball Bat, Katana, Chainsaw, Ma’s Shotgun Blade, Ma’s Shotgun Gun, Pistol, Evil Twins (double pistols), Shotgun, Sawed Off, Sub MG, Rifle, Molotov Cocktail.

All these weapons have their characteristics and hit rating. For example, Fire axe or Machete has 2 points of damage, though Molotov Cocktail can cause a huge damage. You can see the whole list of damage in here.

Zombicide - Weapons

Solo play

If you have enough patience to manage all the players and survivors by yourself this game is absolutely great for a solo experience but a lot of board game players advice to try «Gears of War: The board game», though it’s hard to find. As for the zombies, you will have to move them every turn too and that could be a big minus for «Zombicide» as a solo game. Also, you probably want to try the «Dawn of Zeds (second edition)» because it’s one of the best board games about zombies where you can play 1 player mode easily!

Zombicide - Solo Game

Errata

The developers of this game gave a good feedback about erratas and misprint which players have noticed. Here it is –

«Revised layout for a better reading, Revised terminology (ex: “Player’s turn” is now “Players’ Phase”), Introducing Pimpmobile weapons (Evil Twins and Ma’s Shotgun), Introducing many points previously listed in the FAQ (especially revised Missions), Missions now display difficulty, suggested number of Survivors and average game time».

Rulebook

«P. 4 – Game turn overview information, P. 5 – Updated Line of sight rules, P. 10 – Compiling and expanding various rules about Players’ Phase (especially car rules), P. 13 – Updates of the Runners management for increased playability. All Zombies now play their first Action then Runners play their second Action.

P. 17 – Extended rules about weapons: Sniper Rifle, Molotov and reloading weapons, P. 17-18 – Updated car attack rules, P. 31 – Index».

Similar Games

Zombicide vs Dead of Winter

Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game

Zombicide is about killing as many zombies as you can and achieving the goal with you friends. Dead of winter is more co-op but could have a traitor in the game while each of you try and achieve you own secret objectives.

Zombicide vs Descent

Descent Journeys in the Dark Second Edition

Both are great. As far as the quality of the game goes, you can’t go wrong with either. I’d make the choice based on which has the more appealing theme to you. Descent has much more character development and progression. It’s more story driven. Zombicide is high pressure, raw, gritty zombie slaughter with no real story but I find it to be way more fun. I actually traded Descent for Zombicide and I’m glad I did but I’m a sucker for zombie apocalypse theme.

Zombicide vs Last night on Earth

Last Night on Earth

The action system in Zombicide seems to be adapted directly from Zombie Plague, viz., each action can be used to either move, shoot, search, etc. This also differs from Last Night on Earth which of course has dice-driven movement. Another good call on the designer’s part.

Last Night on Earth, I remember thinking is like they took the best parts from all the other zombie games, added their own innovations, and stitched it all together into one Frankenstein of a zombie game. That is true of the expansions as well. The Survival of the Fittest expansion added much-needed barricades, similar to those seen in Zombie Plague and ZombieTown. And the up-coming Timber Peakexpansion will introduce skill development, and will be released around the same time as Zpocalypse and Zombicide which also offer similar features.

Zombicide vs City horror

City of Horror

Zombicide is a fun beer and pretzels coop that quickly becomes quite difficult. There is a strong sense of humor to the characters and really should not be taken very seriously. City of Horror however can be a very tense negotiation game at almost has nothing to do with zombies. It is very dark in theme what with the voting on who becomes zombie chow but plays much faster than Zombicide.

Zombicide vs Zombies!

Zombies!

Zombies! and Zombicide are two very different games. I play both games – Zombies! is cheap and funny; Zombicide is a game which requires more thinking. One of the problems I have with Zombies! is that the board pieces don’t stay put while you’re playing the game – however, I quite like it as a game, and it is good value for money.

Zombicide, however, is a brilliantly designed game, with high quality models, well designed components and balance and a very full box of contents. In terms of value for money, rather than actual cost, it is one of the best value for money games I have come across. If you are into games, you don’t have to buy one or the other. The two games are different enough to have both.

F.A.Q.

Here’s our traditional F.A.Q section with useful tips for players –

Q: Should I draw a Zombie card when opening the door of the building containing the Player starting area?

A: No.

Q: What happens if a Fatty should be spawned but there are no Walkers left?

A: Since a Fatty should spawn with two Walkers, the lack of the requested Zombie type means all Walkers on the board gain an extra activation.

Q: With the Plenty of Ammo card, can a Survivor choose to re-roll only the misses?

A: No. If you choose to re-roll an attack, you must re-roll all the dice, not just the misses. The new result takes the place of the previous one.

Q: If I’m Dual-wielding two sawedoff shotguns, can I reload both with a single Action?

A: Yes. Two identical Dual weapons can be used at the cost of a single Action, either to attack or to reload.
